EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the devastating fire that engulfed the Old Town Hall of Amsterdam and some adjacent buildings on 7 July 1652. The image serves to illustrate the stark contrast between traditional and modern methods of extinguishing fires. On the left side, brave individuals armed with buckets and ladders valiantly attempt to quell the raging flames. Meanwhile, on the right side, a revolutionary new approach is employed as firefighters fight fire with fire spray. The photograph features a handwritten four-line caption in both Dutch and French languages, adding an authentic touch to this historical documentation. Additionally, handwritten letters are visible on display, further enhancing its authenticity. This particular print is part of Jan van der Heyden's Brandspuitenboek (Fire Engine Book), where it appears as plate 3 in later editions alongside explanatory text. Van der Heyden is attributed as either the creator or contributor to this remarkable piece. The scene depicted showcases not only the destructive power of fire but also highlights early attempts at firefighting techniques during this period in Amsterdam's history. The Old Town Hall itself dates back to the 14th century before succumbing to flames in 1652. Measuring approximately h 358 mm x w 460 mm, this image was captured using paper, ink, and chalk materials sometime before or around 1690. It stands as a testament to human resilience in times of crisis while serving as a reminder of our continuous quest for improved fire-fighting equipment throughout history.
