The Royal London Yacht Club Match, 1858. Creator: Unknown
The Royal London Yacht Club Match, 1858. Sailing on the Thames. The race was with third-class boats only, and three prizes were contended for, the distance being from Erith to Coalhouse Point returning to a boat moored off Greenwich...There were four boats entered...The steamer Father Thames was chartered by the club to convey the members and their friends, which, on leaving Blackwall, was filled with a brilliant and fashionable company of ladies and gentlemen...Little Mosquito was away first, closely followed by the Julia, whose topsail was first set; the Atalanta was next, and then the Blue Bell. The Atalanta, however, having carried away her mainstay, and, bearing up to repair damages sprung her mainmast, this accident destroyed her chance for the prizes, but she still sailed pluckily on...[they] finished at Greenwich in the following order: Julia, 4h. 28m. 40s; Little Mosquito, 4h. 32m. 10s.; Blue Bell, 5h. 5m. 30s...The prizes were presented to the respective winners...and bumpers of champagne were quaffed by the numerous guests...The steam-boat then ran down as far as Erith, the company amusing themselves with dancing, and returning to London-bridge Wharf with the reminiscence of a pleasant day's enjoyment'. EDITORS COMMENTS
"The Royal London Yacht Club Match of 1858: A Day of Sailing and Celebration on the Thames This photograph, taken from the banks of the River Thames, captures the excitement and elegance of the Royal London Yacht Club Match held in 1858. The race, which took place between Erith and Coalhouse Point, returning to a boat moored off Greenwich, attracted a brilliant and fashionable crowd of ladies and gentlemen. Four third-class boats, Little Mosquito, Julia, Atalanta, and Blue Bell, competed for three prizes. The steamer Father Thames was chartered by the club to transport the members and their guests, and as it set sail from Blackwall, it was filled with an eager and stylish crowd. The race began with Little Mosquito leading the way, closely followed by Julia, whose topsail was the first to be set. Atalanta was next, but her mainstay gave way, causing her to bear up and spring her mainmast. Despite this setback, she valiantly continued the race. The order of finish was Julia in 4 hours, 28 minutes, and 40 seconds; Little Mosquito in 4 hours, 32 minutes, and 10 seconds; and Blue Bell in 5 hours, 5 minutes, and 30 seconds. The prizes were presented to the respective winners, and champagne flowed freely among the numerous guests. The steam-boat then carried the jubilant crowd down to Erith, where they were entertained with dancing before returning to London-bridge Wharf with fond memories of a delightful day's enjoyment." This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the world of yachting and high society in the mid-19th century. The image is from the "Illustrated London News" of 1858 and is a testament to the enduring appeal of competitive sailing and the joy of a day spent on the water.
