EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century chromolithograph showcases a remarkable portrait of King Charles VII of France, captured around 1445. As the ruler of France from 1422 until his death in 1461, Charles played a significant role in the country's history. Born into the esteemed House of Valois as the son of Charles VI, he inherited a tumultuous kingdom torn apart by conflict with England. One defining moment that forever etched his name in history was his coronation in Reims in 1429. This pivotal event was made possible through the extraordinary efforts of Joan of Arc, who fought valiantly to liberate France from English control. The original painting upon which this print is based can be found at none other than the renowned Louvre Museum in Paris. The image portrays King Charles VII with an air of regality and authority. His hands are clasped together, symbolizing strength and determination as he leads his nation through turbulent times. Dressed resplendently in royal attire, complete with an exquisite hat adorned with intricate details, he exudes both power and elegance. This print not only captures a historical figure but also serves as a testament to artistic craftsmanship across centuries. It allows us to appreciate Jean Fouquet's original masterpiece while providing insight into French royalty during the fifteenth century—a time when monarchs shaped nations and legends like Joan of Arc emerged to inspire generations to come.
