EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a page from the renowned "Tales of a Parrot (Tuti-nama)" series, specifically depicting the seventh night of the story. Painted by an artist belonging to the Mughal School during Akbar's reign in 16th century India, this exquisite artwork measures 20x14.3 cm and is housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. In this particular scene, we witness an intriguing interaction between Khujasta, the wife of our parrot's master, and the cunning parrot itself. Night after night, this clever domesticated bird entices Khujasta to secretly meet her lover under cover of darkness. However, just as she is about to leave on this eventful seventh night, our sly protagonist diverts her attention with a tantalizing tale. The parrot skillfully narrates each story fragment with such allure that Khujasta becomes completely engrossed and unable to tear herself away before hearing its conclusion. As dawn breaks upon finishing yet another mesmerizing narrative thread spun by our raconteur bird friend, it becomes too late for Khujasta to venture out unnoticed. The artist responsible for painting this page remains deeply rooted in pre-Mughal painting styles prevalent at that time in India. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring life to every element depicted – from the anthropomorphic talking parrot perched within its cage amidst a garden pavilion backdrop to Khujasta's captivated expression. This image serves as a testament not only to artistic excellence but also explores themes of manipulation, infidelity, curiosity-driven distraction while showcasing storytelling prowess through visual means. It truly encapsulates both beauty and intrigue within its delicate frame.
