EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment of opulence and decadence during the Gilded Age in America. The group portrait features Mrs. Douglas Robinson, Franklin Plumer, Miss Pauline Riggs, Mr. Charles Munn, Mrs. Garrick Riggs, and Mr. Frederick Weeks at the James Hazen Hyde Ball held on January 31,1905. The event was hosted by James Hazen Hyde himself, an American millionaire socialite who inherited majority shares in the Equitable Life Assurance Society. Known for his extravagant lifestyle, Hyde spared no expense in creating a c18th French-themed ball that filled two ballrooms at Sherrys Hotel in New York. In this image, the attendees are dressed to impress in elaborate fancy dress costumes befitting the theme of the evening. The women don elegant gowns adorned with tiaras while holding delicate fans as accessories. The men sport white tie attire exuding sophistication and refinement. However, behind this glamorous facade lies a tale of scandal and downfall for Hyde and his insurance company. Accused of being too frivolous to run such an establishment, Equitable Life Assurance Society fell into chaos later that year. This silver gelatin print by Byron Company offers us a glimpse into a bygone era where opulence reigned supreme but also serves as a reminder that even wealth cannot shield one from consequences.
