EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "The War in South Africa" captures a significant moment during the Second Boer War. Created by Melton Prior and published in The Illustrated London News on June 23,1900, this print showcases the jubilant scenes that unfolded across South Africa. In the foreground of the image, Lord Kitchener stands tall amidst a group of school children who are eagerly waving flags to celebrate their relief from war's grip. Behind them, military personnel can be seen crossing a bridge towards the Diamond Jubilee Pavilion. The town guard proudly displays their uniforms as they march through West Street. Decorated carts filled with supplies pass by Mr. Prior himself, capturing his attention as he immortalizes this historic event through his artistry. Mafeking Day is being commemorated with firing guns and rejoicings throughout Market Square while Lord Roberts addresses the crowd gathered at Town Hall. War correspondents from Morning Leader document every detail of these celebrations while citizens express their gratitude for peace restored after enduring hardships at Sand River Drift and other battlefields. Transportation plays a crucial role in this scene as wagons hitched together transport essential goods across Uitenhage, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and beyond. This engraving serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical record of an era defined by conflict but also marked by resilience and unity among its people. Bridgeman Images has preserved this remarkable piece of history within its private collection for all
