EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating lithograph titled "People Gladly Welcome the New Century, but Not to Ask the Time What Depends on Man" by Achille Beltrame depicts a scene filled with anticipation and wonder as individuals eagerly embrace the arrival of a new era. Created in 1901 for Courier Sunday, this illustration beautifully captures the essence of that momentous time. In this enchanting image, we are transported to a snowy winter evening at an Italian railway station. The steam from the train engine billows into the cold night air, creating an ethereal atmosphere. A diverse crowd gathers outside the carriages, their faces illuminated by lamps and lights. Men and women alike wave excitedly while children cheer with joy. Beltrame's attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this print - from the intricate depiction of snowflakes falling gently onto coats and hats, to the expressions of hope and optimism on each person's face. It serves as a reminder that despite technological advancements shaping our lives, it is ultimately human effort that determines our destiny. This artwork not only celebrates the dawning of a new century but also prompts us to reflect upon our own role in shaping our future. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing scene, we are reminded that time is not merely measured by clocks or calendars; rather, it depends on humanity's collective actions and aspirations. Through his masterful use of color and composition, Beltrame transports us back in time to witness this historic moment filled with excitement and possibility. This lithograph continues to inspire viewers even over a century later with its timeless message about human agency in determining our fate.
