Postcard : Meteor tracks
Cards from Science Photo Library
Meteor tracks
Meteor tracks and star trails above Santorini, Greece, artwork. The meteor tracks (running from upper right to lower left) are caused by tiny bits of space rock and dust burning up in the Earths atmosphere. The high speeds of impact cause the rock to vaporize and create a shockwave in the air in front of the meteor. The trail is much larger than the rock causing it. Most meteors burn up high in the Earths atmosphere before they reach the ground. Those that do reach the ground are called meteorites. Clusters of meteors are called meteor showers. Star trails, seen in time-exposure photography, are due to the Earths rotation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the mesmerizing beauty of meteor tracks and star trails above Santorini, Greece. The photograph captures the celestial dance of tiny bits of space rock and dust as they burn up in Earth's atmosphere, leaving behind magnificent streaks across the night sky. The meteor tracks, running from upper right to lower left, are a result of high-speed impacts that cause the rocks to vaporize and create a breathtaking shockwave in front of them. These trails are much larger than the rocks themselves, illustrating the immense power unleashed during their journey through our atmosphere. Most meteors burn up before reaching the ground, but those lucky few that do make it are called meteorites. Meanwhile, clusters of meteors create awe-inspiring displays known as meteor showers. Complementing this cosmic spectacle are star trails captured through time-exposure photography. These swirling patterns reveal Earth's rotation against a backdrop of twinkling stars, adding an extra layer of enchantment to this already extraordinary scene. Through this stunning illustration, we can't help but marvel at the wonders of our universe—its vastness and its ability to inspire us with its ethereal beauty. This artwork is a testament to both scientific curiosity and artistic expression—a true fusion between astronomy and creativity that Science Photo Library has masterfully brought together for all to appreciate.
