Head of mosquito

Mosquito head. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified male mosquito (family Culicidae). Its large compound eyes (made up of numerous red facets) are at top centre. Its feathery blue antennae protrude from below the compound eyes, with sensory palps (yellow) visible at lower left and right. The antennae of the male mosquito are bushier than those of the females as they are used to detect mates by the precise frequency of the female wing- beat. The needle-like proboscis (yellow) used for feeding runs down from centre. Only female mosquitoes feed on blood, the males feeding on plant juices like nectar. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a male mosquito's head, captured through a coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). At the center, we are drawn to its large compound eyes composed of numerous red facets, providing an otherworldly appearance. Above these mesmerizing eyes lie feathery blue antennae that distinguish this male specimen from its female counterparts. The bushier antennae serve a crucial purpose - they enable the detection of potential mates by precisely sensing the frequency of female wing-beats. Visible at lower left and right are sensory palps in vibrant yellow hues, further enhancing our understanding of this fascinating insect's anatomy. Directly below the compound eyes lies a needle-like proboscis also depicted in yellow; it is responsible for feeding activities. Interestingly, only female mosquitoes feed on blood while males sustain themselves with plant juices like nectar. Through this image, we gain insight into nature's remarkable diversity and complexity within the animal kingdom. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly small creatures possess extraordinary adaptations and play vital roles within ecosystems worldwide. This photograph not only highlights the beauty found in scientific exploration but also underscores our ongoing fascination with zoology and insects specifically.
