EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases an animatronic model of the Velociraptor, a fascinating and iconic dinosaur species that once roamed the Earth during the Late Cretaceous period. The Velociraptor, a member of the Dromaeosauridae family, is a carnivorous reptile that belonged to the larger group of Archosauria, characterized by their leathery skin and bipedal locomotion. The Velociraptor, meaning "swift seizer," was initially misidentified due to the discovery of its much larger skull in Mongolia, which was later identified as belonging to a different species. The true Velociraptor, however, was discovered in the early 1970s in Mongolia and was much smaller, measuring around 1.6 meters in length. This animatronic model, expertly crafted by Kokoro, a renowned Japanese company specializing in robotics and animatronics, brings the Velociraptor to life with remarkable detail and realism. The model's feathered body, sharp claws, and expressive eyes capture the essence of this intriguing prehistoric creature. The Velociraptor was a coelurosaur, a theropod dinosaur that was part of the Maniraptora, a group of theropods characterized by their grasping hands and feathers. Its skeletal structure reveals adaptations for both running and hunting, such as its elongated, serrated teeth and powerful hind limbs. Despite popular culture portraying Velociraptors as pack hunters, recent discoveries suggest they may have hunted alone or in pairs. Regardless, their presence in our imaginations continues to captivate and inspire us, making this animatronic model a must-see exhibit at any natural history museum.
