EDITORS COMMENTS
This equestrian portrait showcases Ferdinand VII (1784-1833), the King of Spain from 1808 to 1833, during the latter part of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. At the age of 24, Ferdinand ascended to the throne following the abdication of his father, Charles IV. The portrait, painted by the renowned Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), was created in 1808. Ferdinand VII is depicted in a grand and regal manner, astride a powerful horse, holding the reins with one hand while the other hand is raised, giving the impression of command and control. The King wears the uniform of a captain general, signifying his military position. The flare of his uniform adds a dynamic element to the portrait, drawing the viewer's attention to the monarch. This painting is a significant piece of European art history, as it was created during a time of great political upheaval in Spain. Ferdinand's reign was marked by numerous conflicts, including the Peninsular War, which saw Spain invaded by French forces. The portrait, therefore, serves as a visual representation of the monarch's strength and determination during a tumultuous period in Spanish history. The equestrian portrait of Ferdinand VII is currently housed in the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, Spain, where it continues to be admired for its artistic merit and historical significance.
