Satellite view of Morocco

January 1, 2005 - While green vegetation covers the lowlands of western Morocco, winter visits the Atlas Mountains at its center. To the west is the Atlantic Ocean; to the northeast is the Mediterranean Sea. Between the two is the Strait of Gibraltar. To the southwest is Algeria, with which Morocco shares an uneasy border.
The famous city of Casablanca appears as a grey smudge on Moroccs northwestern coast, and the nations capital, Rabat, sits on the coast just about 75 kilometers to the northeast, right where the coast curves abruptly to the north toward the Strait of Gibraltar. The city of Tangier, Moroccos most common point of entry, sits on the western side of the tip. Toward the bottom right side of the image is a portion of the northwestern edge of the Sahara Desert, known as the Great Western Erg in Algeria

The lowlands in western Morocco are adorned with lush green vegetation, while the majestic Atlas Mountains at its center are blanketed in winter snow. The photograph captures the geographical proximity of Morocco to both the Atlantic Ocean on its west and the Mediterranean Sea to its northeast, separated by the iconic Strait of Gibraltar. In this image, we can spot Casablanca as a faint grey smudge along Morocco's northwestern coast, while Rabat - the nation's capital - sits about 75 kilometers northeast where the coastline abruptly turns towards Gibraltar. Tangier, a bustling city and common entry point into Morocco for many visitors, is located on the western side of this coastal tip. Towards the bottom right corner lies a glimpse of Algeria's Great Western Erg desert – an arid expanse that forms part of Sahara Desert. This photograph beautifully captures Morocco's unique blend of vibrant cities nestled between mountains and deserts.
