Capturing the Rich History of Sheffield's Markets - A Glimpse into Byelaws and Traditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases an invaluable piece of history, revealing the byelaws established under the Sheffield Market Act of 1847. The image takes us back to a time when bustling market halls were at the heart of daily life in Sheffield, Yorkshire. The photograph highlights various market spaces that catered to different needs. The Market Hall stands proud as a hub for butchers' meat, fish, game, poultry, rabbits, butter, and eggs available every day. Adjacent to it is the Norfolk Market Hall—a treasure trove offering provisions for human consumption (excluding fresh meat and certain animals), gardeners' plants and flowers, roots and seeds, as well as manufactured goods. Further along our journey through this historical snapshot lies Castlefolds Market—a place where wholesale items found their way into retail stalls within the Market Hall on a daily basis. Tuesdays were dedicated to corn trading at the Corn Exchange and Market while hay markets flourished every Tuesday and Saturday with hay, straw fodder pulses potatoes among other root crops. Smithfield Market emerges prominently in this visual narrative—Tuesdays transformed into vibrant scenes filled with horses cattle sheep pigs calves being traded. Additionally featured are two annual fairs; one during summer held on Tuesday-Wednesday next Whit Monday while another known as Winter Fair took place on the last Tuesday-Wednesday in November.
