EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the cover of a steel department trade catalogue from 1928, belonging to Ibbotson Brothers and Company Limited. The renowned manufacturers of steel, saws, files, springs, bolts and nuts were based at the esteemed Globe Works on Penistone Road in Sheffield. Founded by William Ibbotson in 1809 on Bridge Street, the company underwent various transformations before settling at its iconic location. The historical significance of this catalogue is evident as it provides a glimpse into the diverse range of products offered by Ibbotson Brothers during that era. From stove grates to fenders, saws to scythes, edge tools and more; their expertise extended across multiple industries. Despite facing bankruptcy in 1846, William Ibbotson's resilience led him to re-establish the Globe Works at Cross Smithfield. Eventually relocating to Russell Street (later renamed Alma Street) by 1862 proved fruitful for the company's growth and prosperity. Intriguingly enough, Jonas Woodhead and Sons Limited acquired Ibbotson Brothers in 1939 but retained its name until 1971 when Woodhead Components Limited absorbed all operations within the Globe Steel Works. This remarkable photograph not only preserves an important piece of Sheffield's industrial heritage but also serves as a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by Ibbotson Brothers and their contributions to manufacturing excellence throughout history.
