This is an example of a Seyfert galaxy, which have a highly-energetic nucleus with an energy output comparable to that of quasars. The nucleus of this galaxy contains a powerful emitter of X-rays. This galaxy is a member of the Fornax Cluster of galaxies, a group which lies around 70 million light years away. NGC 1365 is one of the nearest of the Seyfert galaxies, most of which are extremely distant.
