Igor Vasilyevich Kurchatov (1903-1960, right), Soviet nuclear physicist, talking to colleagues at the Leningrad Physical-Technical Institute, Leningrad, Russia. In the 1930s, Kurchatov supervised the construction of what was then the worlds largest cyclotron particle accelerator. He also led the work on the USSRs first atomic bomb (1949), hydrogen bomb (1953) and the worlds first nuclear power plant (1954). He was a member of the legislative body of the USSR from 1949.
