Ivan Pavlov, Russian physiologist
Ivan Pavlov, Russian physiologist, born Ryazan on September 14, 1849, died Leningrad on February 27, 1936, photographed (centre) with dog during a demonstration. Pavlov quit training for the priesthood to study natural science in St Petersburg. His experiments in 1889 on the mechanism of digestion in dogs established the role of the autonomic nervous system & won him a Nobel prize in 1904. He is best remembered for subsequent work on conditioned reflexes - conditioning a dog to salivate in anticipation of food by ringing a bell each meal time. Eventually, the bell alone provoked salivation. These experiments founded behaviourist psychology

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned Russian physiologist, Ivan Pavlov, during a demonstration with his loyal canine companion. Born in Ryazan on September 14,1849, and later passing away in Leningrad on February 27,1936, Pavlov's contributions to the field of science are immeasurable. Originally destined for a life in priesthood, he chose to pursue natural science studies in St Petersburg instead. In 1889, Pavlov conducted groundbreaking experiments on digestion mechanisms in dogs that revolutionized our understanding of the autonomic nervous system. This pioneering work earned him the prestigious Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1904. However, it is his subsequent research on conditioned reflexes that truly solidified his legacy. Pavlov's most famous experiment involved conditioning a dog to salivate at the sound of a bell by associating it with mealtime. Over time, even without food present, merely ringing the bell alone would elicit salivation from the dog—a remarkable display of learned behavior. These seminal experiments laid the foundation for behaviorist psychology and continue to shape our understanding of human and animal responses today. The photograph itself showcases Pavlov at work alongside his faithful four-legged subject—an image that encapsulates both scientific curiosity and unwavering dedication. It serves as a testament to this brilliant physiologist's profound impact on our understanding of physiology and psychology alike.
