Electron flow

Electron flow. Computer model of electron flow in a 2-dimensional electrical landscape. The pattern observed depends upon both the initial conditions and the electric potential. The electrons enter at top left and spread out over the landscape. The tracks vary from dark (few electrons) to bright (many electrons). The electric potential can be considered the landscapes shape: this is a bumpy landscape. Unseen hills and valleys represent the varying electric attraction. This bumpiness is only slight, but it causes this branching effect. This could interfere with the operation of atomic- scale electronics. This model of electron flow was created as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Electron Flow" showcases a computer model of electron movement in a 2-dimensional electrical landscape. The intricate pattern observed is influenced by both the initial conditions and the electric potential present. As depicted, the electrons enter from the top left corner and disperse across the landscape, leaving behind tracks that range in darkness (representing few electrons) to brightness (indicating many electrons). The electric potential can be likened to the shape of this bumpy landscape, with unseen hills and valleys symbolizing varying electric attraction. Although these bumps are subtle, they give rise to a mesmerizing branching effect captured in this artwork. It is worth noting that such branching could potentially disrupt atomic-scale electronics' functionality. Professor Eric Heller skillfully crafted this model as an artistic representation merging physics and mathematics seamlessly. His simulation serves not only as an illustration but also as a research tool for physicists exploring particle physics at its core. This thought-provoking piece invites contemplation on how electron flow behaves within different electrical landscapes while showcasing the beauty found within scientific simulations. Science Photo Library presents this extraordinary artwork capturing strands of flowing particles, demonstrating their commitment to sharing visually stunning images that bridge artistry with scientific exploration.
