EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century, showcasing an intriguing artwork of a captive sloth. Known as a haut, this large animal was believed to dwell in the air-bound trees. The artwork by Andre Thevet provides valuable insight into the natural history and geography of the lands he explored. The image depicts a Brazilian forest scene, where a native family can be seen capturing this remarkable creature. Identified as Bradypus variegatus, a species of three-toed sloths found in Central and South America, its distinctive three toes are clearly visible. The sloth is held on a leash or halter by one of the indigenous men while surrounded by curious onlookers. The woodcut comes from Chapter XIII of Book XXI in Cosmographie universelle (1575), an extensive work that spans over two volumes and four tomes with more than 1000 pages. This historical piece not only offers insights into zoology but also sheds light on ethnography and anthropology during this period. Todd-White Art Photography has beautifully captured this monochrome representation of wildlife from centuries past. It serves as a reminder of our fascination with nature's wonders throughout history and invites us to appreciate both the artistry and scientific knowledge preserved within these ancient works.
