Blue opal gemstones

Blue opal gemstones. This mineral is a form of hydrous silicon oxide (silica, SiO2). It is named after the Indian word for precious stone. After it has been cut and polished, it has an iridescent sheen. This is as a result of its composition of microspheroids of silicon oxide that refract light. This is enhanced by reflections from tiny conchoidal fractures (crazing) that occur on exposure to the air. Opal never occurs in a crystalline form, but as small veins, globules and crusts. Several types occur: hazy blue, milky white, colourless and the highly prized red (fire opal) and black

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of blue opal gemstones. Known for their iridescent sheen, these gemstones are a form of hydrous silicon oxide, commonly referred to as silica (SiO2). The name "opal" originates from an Indian word that signifies precious stone, which perfectly captures the allure and value associated with this mineral. Once cut and polished, these opals reveal their stunning play of colors caused by microspheroids of silicon oxide refracting light. Adding to their enchantment are reflections from tiny conchoidal fractures that develop when exposed to air. These fractures create a unique pattern known as crazing, further enhancing the opal's visual appeal. Unlike other gemstones found in crystalline forms, opals occur in small veins, globules, and crusts. This particular trio of blue opal gems exhibits different shades within the hazy blue spectrum. Other variations include milky white and colorless types; however, it is the highly sought-after red fire opal and black varieties that hold significant value among collectors. As a testament to Earth's geological wonders, these natural formations exemplify the intricate artistry crafted over time deep within our planet's layers. Appreciating such breathtaking gems allows us to marvel at nature's ability to produce exquisite treasures like no other.
