EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the historic moment of the voyage of Cleopatra's Needle from Egypt to England in 1878. The ancient Egyptian obelisk, presented to Britain in recognition of its victories in the Napoleonic Wars, is shown aboard the specially constructed vessel named Cleopatra, with its tug boat in the background. The scene takes place in the Bay of Biscay, as the ships make their passage across the Atlantic. The obelisk, which dates back to 1300 BC, was carefully transported from Alexandria to Port Said, where it was loaded onto the Cleopatra. The ship, designed to carry the obelisk without causing any damage, was equipped with a large crane and a padded bed to cushion the monument during the journey. The voyage was a significant cultural import for Britain, symbolizing the connection between the ancient world and modern times. The engraving, dated January 26, 1878, captures the sense of wonder and excitement surrounding the transportation of this ancient artifact to its new home in London.
