EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the ancient mausoleum of Qotboddin Heydar, a Persian Sufi saint and the founder of the Haydariyya order of mendicant dervishes, stands proudly against the backdrop of the arid landscape of Torbat-e Heydarieh in Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran. The tomb, also known as Ghotbed Din Heydar or Turbat-e Heydarieh, is believed to date back to the 13th century and is a significant pilgrimage site for followers of Heydar, who is also known by the names Haydar, Heyder, and Qutb ad-Din. Heydar, of possible Turkic origin, was a renowned Persian mystic and ascetic known for his celibacy and self-mortification through piercing his own body with iron rings. His followers, the Haydariyya, were characterized by their mendicant lifestyle, wearing of felt, and walking barefoot. The order gained popularity during the medieval period and spread throughout the Islamic world. The image captures the serene beauty and historical significance of the site, which has stood the test of time for centuries. The intricate geometric patterns adorning the exterior of the mausoleum reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region and the enduring influence of Sufi traditions on Iranian society. The photograph transports us to a time when the spiritual and the earthly coexisted in harmony, and the search for enlightenment was a journey that transcended physical boundaries. Torbat-e Heydarieh, with its ancient tomb and the surrounding landscape, is a testament to the enduring legacy of Heydar and the Haydariyya order, whose teachings continue to inspire seekers of the divine in Iran and beyond. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the power of faith and the transformative potential of the human spirit.
