EDITORS COMMENTS
Great image capturing the United States Air Force's (USAF) Convair B-36D Peacemaker 44-92065 (msn 62) of the 326th Bombardment Squadron, 92nd Bombardment Wing, at the 1952 National Air Races. This historic aircraft had previously accomplished an impressive feat by flying over the North Pole on its inbound journey to the event. In the photograph, the B-36D is undergoing servicing, with engine number 3 running to possibly supply electrical and hydraulic power. Originally built as a B-36B-5-CF and accepted by the USAF in August 1949, this Convair Peacemaker was later converted to the B-36D-45-CF Featherweight Configuration II at Convair's facility in San Diego, California. The B-36D-45-CF was a more streamlined version of the B-36, designed to improve its performance and reduce its weight. After its conversion, the aircraft was assigned to the Military Air Transport Service Depot Center (MASDC) and remained in service until it was scrapped on 27 February 1957. This iconic image showcases the B-36D's impressive presence at the 1952 National Air Races, with its powerful engines and distinctive design on full display.
