EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases one of the two Curtiss-Cox Model 22 racers, meticulously assembled as a monoplane before being crated for shipping to France in the spring of 1920. Texas oil millionaire, S.E.J. Cox, had made the bold decision to commission two of these aircraft for the prestigious James Gordon Bennett race, set to take place in France that September. The design, build, and crating process for the Texas Wildcat and Cactus Kitten were carried out with incredible haste, without the luxury of pre-flight testing. The Curtiss-Cox Model 22 was a product of the innovative era of aviation, with its sleek lines and aerodynamic design reflecting the cutting-edge technology of the time. Despite the lack of testing, the risk-taking spirit of Cox and his team paid off, as both aircraft made it to France and participated in the race, leaving a significant mark in the annals of aviation history.
