One of the two Curtiss-Cox Model 22 racers, assembled as a monoplane before being crated for shipment to France. In the spring of 1920, Texas oil millionaire S. E. J. Cox decided to have two racers built for the James Gordon Bennett race to be held in France the following September. The two aircraft (named Texas wildcat and Cactus Kitten) were hastily designed, built and crated for shipment to France, without the benefit of flight testing. Date: 1920

This photograph showcases one of the two Curtiss-Cox Model 22 racers, meticulously assembled as a monoplane before being crated for shipping to France in the spring of 1920. Texas oil millionaire, S.E.J. Cox, had made the bold decision to commission two of these aircraft for the prestigious James Gordon Bennett race, set to take place in France that September. The design, build, and crating process for the Texas Wildcat and Cactus Kitten were carried out with incredible haste, without the luxury of pre-flight testing.
