EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illustration is taken from The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, Volume 2, published in 1731 by the renowned English naturalist Mark Catesby (1683-1749). The illustration features two fascinating marine species: the Perca sp. croaker and the Holocentrus sp. squirrelfish. The Perca sp. croaker, also known as the Atlantic croaker, is a popular game fish found in the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian Maritimes. This bony fish, belonging to the Perciformes order and the Percidae family, is characterized by its distinctively large, flat head and powerful, compressed body. The croaker's coloration varies from olive green to brownish-gray, with darker spots and bars along its sides. The Holocentrus sp. squirrelfish, a member of the Holocentridae family and the Beryciformes order, is a small, nocturnal fish commonly found in the shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. This fish is easily identified by its unique, elongated dorsal fin, which resembles a bushy tail, giving it the name 'squirrelfish.' The squirrelfish has a brownish-gray body with white spots and stripes, and its pectoral fins are adorned with intricate, colorful patterns. Catesby's meticulous illustrations, produced during the 18th century, remain an invaluable resource for understanding the natural history of North America and the Bahamas. His work showcases the beauty and diversity of the region's fauna, including a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish, such as the Perca sp. croaker and the Holocentrus sp. squirrelfish.
