EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration depicts a significant moment in Spanish history, the Journey of King Alfonso XII and Queen Maria Cristina of Spain to Galicia in 1881. The royal couple, aboard the corvette Tornado, are greeted by a grand squadron of Spanish warships as they approach the estuary of Ferrol in the La Coruna province of Galicia. The squadron, consisting of the frigates Sagunto, Zaragoza, Tornado, Carmen, Concordia, Pelicano, Villa de Madrid, and Almansa, salutes the monarchs with a grand display of firing cannons and raising their sails in a magnificent show of loyalty and celebration. The scene is beautifully captured in this engraving, based on a natural sketch by Rafael Monleon, and published in the prestigious Spanish magazine La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana in 1881. The image showcases the grandeur of the Spanish monarchy during the Bourbon Restoration period, as well as the power and might of the Spanish Armada. The Atlantic Ocean, dotted with the masts of the warships, creates a serene backdrop to the dynamic scene, with the waves gently surging against the shore. The smoke from the saluting guns fills the air, adding to the dramatic atmosphere of the moment. This illustration is a testament to the rich maritime history and tradition of Spain during the late 19th century.
