The Showboat, Maidenhead
Artists impression of The Showboat at Maidenhead, a club offering a swimming pool, sunbathing, cocktails, dinner, dancing, cabaret and sports. Towns such as Maidenhead and Bray were particularly popular due to their proximity to London and location by the River Thames. Built in the early 1930s at a cost of 21, 000, the club was part of a movement to provide the upper middle class with out of town clubs and roadhouses a short drive from London. It was used as a services club and then a spitfire parts factory during the war. At the time of writing, this once splendid art deco building is due for demolition to make way for residential flats. Date: 1933

A Captivating Glimpse into the Past: The Showboat at Maidenhead, 1933 Step back in time to the golden era of leisure and entertainment with this enchanting artists' impression of The Showboat at Maidenhead. This stunning art deco complex, nestled by the picturesque River Thames, was a hub of excitement and luxury in the 1930s. The Showboat was a veritable playground for the upper middle class, offering a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of London. With its prime location in towns such as Maidenhead and Bray, it provided a perfect respite, just a short drive away. This magnificent building, completed in 1933 at a cost of 21,000, was part of a larger movement to create out-of-town clubs and roadhouses. The Showboat was a splendid example of the art deco style, boasting a swimming pool, sunbathing areas, cocktail bars, dinner venues, dance floors, and even cabaret shows. During the war years, The Showboat transformed into a services club and later a spitfire parts factory. However, as we write this, the once-splendid art deco building is due for demolition, making way for residential flats. This image transports us back to a time of elegance and enjoyment, when The Showboat at Maidenhead was the epitome of summer leisure and society's grandest gathering place.
