EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a copperplate engraving by Pietro Ruga, based on an illustration by Lorenzo Rocceggiani from his comprehensive work, "100 Plates of Costumes Religious, Civil and Military of the Ancient Egyptians, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans," published in Rome in 1802 by Franzetti. The engraving showcases two remarkable watercraft from the ancient Roman world: a trireme warship and a smaller boat, both adorned with battering rams. The trireme, a formidable naval vessel of the Roman navy, boasts three decks of oars, each manned by a crew member. The prow of the ship is adorned with a monster's head, symbolizing the power and intimidation it brought to the battlefield. The ram, a sharp, pointed object at the ship's front, was used for ramming enemy ships during combat. The swords attached to the ram added an extra layer of destruction. The smaller boat, also featuring a battering ram, appears to be a support vessel or a transport ship. Both vessels exhibit eyes painted on their sterns, a common motif in ancient maritime iconography, believed to represent the all-seeing eye of the gods, ensuring safe passage and protection during voyages. This intricately detailed engraving offers a fascinating glimpse into the maritime technology, military strategy, and artistic sensibilities of the ancient Roman civilization.
