In the year 1856, Queen Victoria, the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, embarked on a visit to the picturesque town of Dartmouth, Devon. Accompanied by her consort, Prince Albert, and a retinue of nobility and dignitaries, the royal party arrived in Dartmouth on May 21, 1856, via the royal yacht, the HMS Victoria and Albert II. The primary purpose of the visit was to inspect the town's newly established maritime centre and naval base. The maritime centre, a hub for shipbuilding, repair, and maintenance, was a testament to the British Empire's maritime supremacy. Queen Victoria's visit was a significant ceremonial event, symbolizing the importance of Dartmouth as a strategic naval base and a vital link in the defense of the realm. Upon arrival, the Queen was greeted by the town's dignitaries and a grand procession of boats, which escorted her to the maritime centre.
