EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created by Pietro Ruga after an illustration by Lorenzo Rocceggiani in 1802, showcases an intriguing assemblage of Parthian and Dacian weapons and armor. The image is derived from the renowned Trajan's Column in Rome, which is adorned with relief carvings depicting the Roman-Dacian Wars. At the center, a Parthian helmet (1) with a distinctive crest and elaborate decorations is displayed. The Parthian ensign (2), featuring a winged sun disc and a spear, is also depicted. Parthians were ancient Iranian people, and their empire was a significant adversary of the Roman Empire during this period. Two Dacian artifacts are also illustrated. The Dacian breastplate armor (3) is shown, which is characterized by its intricate design and the use of large, overlapping scales. The Dacian quiver (4) is adorned with a decorative pattern, and it holds arrows that would have been used with the shield and other weapons. The Dacians were an ancient people inhabiting the region of Dacia, which is now part of Romania. They were known for their fierce warrior culture and their resistance against the Roman Empire. The shield (not visible in this image) was an essential component of their military equipment. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the military culture and artistic traditions of the ancient civilizations, offering valuable insights into their history and heritage.
