EDITORS COMMENTS
Frederick Richard Chichester, Earl of Belfast (1827-1853) is depicted in this striking oil painting by the Italian artist Orazio de Manara (1804-1877), completed in the year of the Earl's untimely death. The Earl is shown in formal attire, with a serious expression and piercing gaze, against a richly textured background. The painting's high level of detail and realistic rendering are characteristic of de Manara's style, which was influenced by the Neapolitan School and the traditions of Italian portraiture. Born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Frederick Richard Chichester was the eldest son of the 1st Marquess of Donegall and heir to the Earldom of Belfast. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and served as a Member of Parliament for County Antrim from 1852 until his death. Chichester was known for his political acumen and his commitment to improving the lives of his constituents. The painting captures the Earl in the prime of his life, just as he was beginning to make his mark on the political stage. The somber tone of the painting reflects the sadness and loss felt by the Earl's family and friends at his untimely death at the age of 26. The painting serves as a poignant reminder of a life cut short, and a testament to the artistic skill of Orazio de Manara.
