EDITORS COMMENTS
["This striking portrait captures Reginald Brabazon, 12th Earl of Meath, a prominent British politician and philanthropist, in the later years of his life. Born in 1841, the Earl was an ardent imperialist who dedicated much of his time and resources to promoting the British Empire and its rich history. One of his most notable achievements was the establishment of Empire Day, an annual celebration intended to educate children around the world about the Empire and its significance. The first Empire Day was observed on May 24, 1896, and the tradition continued until the mid-20th century. The Earl's passion for the Empire was fueled by his belief that it represented a powerful force for good in the world, bringing civilization, progress, and prosperity to its diverse peoples. He saw education as a key means of fostering a sense of patriotism and unity among the Empire's citizens, and Empire Day was designed to instill in children a deep appreciation for their imperial heritage. Throughout his life, the Earl of Meath was a prolific writer, speaker, and advocate for various philanthropic causes. He served as a Member of Parliament and held numerous positions in the British government, including Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies and Postmaster General. This portrait, taken in 1929, offers a glimpse into the distinguished career and enduring legacy of a man who dedicated himself to promoting the British Empire and its values, both at home and abroad."]
