EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Eugenio Espejo (1747-1795), a prominent figure in the history of Ecuador during the 18th century. Espejo was a lawyer, scientist, and polemicist, known for his role in the separatist movement against Spanish rule. He is often referred to by the pseudonym "Francisco Javier de Santa Cruz." Born in Quito, Espejo was educated in the city's Jesuit schools before studying law in Lima, Peru. He returned to Quito in 1776 and became involved in local politics, advocating for the rights of the indigenous population and challenging the authority of the Spanish colonial government. In this portrait, Espejo is depicted wearing a suit with a vest and a bow tie, accessorized with buttons and a frill. The image captures the modern age of the late 18th century, with Espejo's serious expression and the intricate details of his clothing. Espejo's most famous work is "El Guia de los Naturales de la Nueva Granada," a medical and botanical treatise that was published posthumously in 1811. The work was groundbreaking for its time, as it was one of the first to describe the natural history of the Andes region in detail. Despite his contributions to science and politics, Espejo's separatist activities led to his arrest and imprisonment in 1793. He was eventually released, but died in Quito in 1795. Today, Espejo is considered a national hero in Ecuador, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of Ecuatorian intellectuals and activists.
