EDITORS COMMENTS
La Nouvelle Europe: The Communist Regime in Budapest - An Arc de Triomphe in Place Andrassy on May 1, 1919 This evocative photograph captures the unique spectacle of the Communist regime in Budapest during the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919. The image shows an Arc de Triomphe, located in Place Andrassy, adorned with red decorations for May Day celebrations. The left pillar bears the Hungarian declaration, "The Red Soldier Does Not Fight Against His Proletarian Brothers, But Against the Capitalists of the League of Nations," while the right pillar proclaims, "Destroy Capital to Build the Worldwide Communist Society on Its Ruins." The Hungarian Soviet Republic, also known as the Hungarian Communist regime, was a short-lived Marxist-Leninist state that existed between March and August 1919. This revolutionary government came to power following the end of World War I and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The regime was characterized by its radical socialist policies and its opposition to the Treaty of Trianon, which imposed harsh territorial losses on Hungary. The May Day celebrations depicted in the photograph were a significant display of the regime's power and commitment to communist ideology. The cost of these decorations totaled eighteen million roubles. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the political turmoil and ideological struggles that marked the aftermath of World War I in Europe. This photograph is from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924. The creator of the photograph remains unknown.
