EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled "Family of Drought Refugees on U.S. 99 near Bakersfield, California," was captured by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in the 1930s during the Great Depression. The image depicts a desolate scene of a destitute family huddled around their belongings on the side of U.S. Route 99. The family, consisting of parents and several children, appear to be displaced farmers, likely forced to leave their homes due to the drought and economic hardships of the era. The photograph was taken during Lange's tenure with the Farm Security Administration (FSA), a New Deal agency established to provide relief to rural areas affected by the Depression. The FSA commissioned Lange and other photographers to document the living conditions of American farmers and rural communities. The family's possessions, carefully packed in cardboard boxes, are loaded onto an old automobile, a 1930s AC Ltd, which seems to be their only means of transportation. The car, with its worn-out tires and faded paint, symbolizes the family's struggle to move on from their past and start anew. The photograph captures the sense of displacement and forced migration that characterized the era, as well as the resilience and determination of the American people in the face of adversity. Lange's photograph is an important historical document of the Great Depression and the displacement of rural communities during that time. It is a poignant reminder of the human cost of economic downturns and the importance of social safety nets in times of crisis.
