Tomb of the Howard family at Arundel Church, Sussex
The tomb of the Howard family of Arundel, Sesssex, in the parish church of St Nicholas. This church is interesting because it is physically divided between Roman Catholic and Church of England, the Fitzalan Howard family (the family of the Duke of Norfolk) being the foremost Catholic family in England. At the Dissolution, Henry VIII, being Supreme Head of the Church of England, sold the Collegiate Chapel of the College of priests and all its property to Henry Fitzalan, the 12th Earl of Arundel. At that point, the church was divided into two. Entry to the private Fitzalan Chapel (the Catholic section) is only possible via Arundel Castle. Illustration from " Picturesque Europe - The British Isles" published by Cassell Petter & Galpin in 1875 (price 2/6d)
