EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, titled "Ejiri in the Suruga province" was created by the renowned Japanese artist Hokusai in approximately 1830. Part of his iconic series called "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" this artwork showcases the majestic mountain from various locations and weather conditions. In this particular scene, we are transported to Ejiri, a region within the Suruga province. The landscape is beautifully depicted with intricate details and vibrant colors typical of ukiyo-e prints. A gusty wind blows through a marshy area, causing nearby trees to sway vigorously. Snow-capped Mount Fuji stands tall in the distance, dominating the composition and adding a sense of grandeur. Hokusai's mastery lies not only in capturing nature's beauty but also in portraying human presence within these landscapes. In this print, a lone man can be seen braving the strong winds as he walks along a path near the marshes. His figure adds scale to the vastness of nature surrounding him and evokes a feeling of awe at mankind's insignificance compared to such natural wonders. The popularity of Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views" series led to its expansion beyond its original publication, resulting in ten additional prints being added later on. This particular woodblock print serves as an excellent example of Hokusai's skillful craftsmanship and his ability to transport viewers into different seasons and weather conditions while showcasing Japan's breathtaking landscapes
