Hindu women had been prominent members of Mughal harems since the time of Akbar, whose chief queen was a Hindu princess from the kingdom of Amber (later renamed Jaipur) in present-day Rajasthan. Under golden stars and a crescent moon, this royal palace woman holds a flower garland to offer at a shrine to the Hindu god Shiva. The light of butter lamps casts a shadow behind her figure; experimentation with the depiction of shadows, typically absent in earlier Mughal painting, increased among artists during the 1700s.); Iranian, out of copyright

A Night Scene of Shiva Puja
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports us to the enchanting world of Mughal India. Created by Muhammad Riza-i Hindi in the 18th century, this exquisite artwork showcases the artist's mastery of opaque watercolor and gold on paper. In this scene, we witness a Hindu woman, belonging to the royal palace, engaged in a sacred act of devotion. Under a sky adorned with golden stars and a crescent moon, she delicately holds a flower garland as an offering at a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The warm glow emanating from butter lamps casts ethereal shadows behind her figure, adding depth and intrigue to the composition. What makes this painting particularly noteworthy is its departure from traditional Mughal art conventions. During the 1700s, artists began experimenting with new techniques, including the depiction of shadows which were previously absent in earlier works. This artistic innovation can be observed here as Riza-i Hindi skillfully incorporates shadow play into his portrayal. The intricate calligraphy on the verso further enhances this piece's beauty and cultural significance. Four lines of thuluth script adorn blue paper with gold accents, showcasing Persian influence on Indian art during this period. Displayed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA; "A Night Scene of Shiva Puja" offers viewers an intimate glimpse into both religious devotion and artistic evolution within Mughal society during India's rich history.
