Accompanying Richard Burton's expedition from 1855 to 1858, sponsored by the prestigious Royal Geographical Society, Speke made a groundbreaking discovery - Lake Victoria Nyanza. However, it was on a subsequent expedition between 1860 and 1862 that Speke achieved another momentous feat. He unveiled the exit from Lake Victoria into the White Nile and named it Ripon Falls. This engraving captures a pivotal moment during this journey when Speke intervenes to protect one of his wives from Mtesa, Uganda's tyrant king who had been angered by her actions.
