Accompanied Richard Burtons expedition (1855-1858), sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society, when he discovered Lake Victoria Nyanza. On a subsequent expedition of 1860-1862 he discovered the exit from the lake into the White Nile which he named Ripon Falls. Born in Bideford, Devon, England in 1827, Speke served as an officer in the British Indian Army and dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of Africa. Accompanying Richard Burton's expedition from 1855 to 1858, sponsored by the prestigious Royal Geographical Society, Speke made a groundbreaking discovery - Lake Victoria Nyanza. However, it was on a subsequent expedition between 1860 and 1862 that Speke achieved another momentous feat. He unveiled the exit from Lake Victoria into the White Nile and named it Ripon Falls.
