View of an aurora borealis display

View of an aurora borealis display (blue) centred on the constellation of Ursa Major. Aurorae are caused by the interaction between energetic charged particles coming from the Sun and molecules of gases in the upper atmosphere (about 100km). A stream of charged particles, known as the solar wind, flows continuously from the Suns corona towards interplanetary space at speeds of 400-500 km/s. These particles do not reach the Earths atmosphere due to the shielding effect of the Earths magnetic field. However, violent solar activities such as solar flares emit highly energetic particles which penetrate this shield and ionise molecules in the atmosphere

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing display of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. The image beautifully captures the ethereal blue hues of this natural phenomenon, which is centered on the constellation of Ursa Major. Aurorae are created by an enchanting interaction between energetic charged particles originating from our Sun and molecules of gases in Earth's upper atmosphere, approximately 100 kilometers above us. These breathtaking light shows are a result of the solar wind, a continuous stream of charged particles flowing from the Sun's corona into interplanetary space at astonishing speeds ranging from 400 to 500 kilometers per second. Ordinarily, these charged particles would not reach our planet's atmosphere due to Earth's magnetic field acting as a protective shield. However, during intense solar activities such as solar flares, highly energetic particles manage to penetrate this shielding effect and ionize molecules within our atmosphere. The Science Photo Library has captured this awe-inspiring moment in nature with remarkable detail and precision. This photograph serves as a reminder of the extraordinary electromagnetic effects that occur in our planet's skies and highlights one of Earth science's most captivating atmospheric phenomena - aurorae or northern lights displays.
