SEM of vascular tissue of tobacco leaf B745 / 0312

Tobacco. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of vascular leaf fragments in cigarette tobacco. The walls of the xylem vessels seen here are strengthened with cellulose and lignin in annular and reticulate thickenings (brown). These vessels are responsible for the upward translocation of water in the living plant. The tobacco plant, Nicotiana tabacum, is cultivated in warm dry climates. The leaves are cured and matured in storage for two to three years before being used in cigarettes, cigars and snuff. The leaves also yield the alkaloid nicotine, one of the most powerful poisons known, and addictive to humans. Magnification: x520 at 5x7cm size. x740 at 8x6ins, x395 at 10x7cm master size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a close-up view of the vascular tissue in a tobacco leaf. The intricate network of xylem vessels, responsible for transporting water upwards within the plant, is beautifully captured under a scanning electron microscope. The walls of these vessels are fortified with cellulose and lignin, appearing as striking annular and reticulate thickenings in shades of brown. The tobacco plant, scientifically known as Nicotiana tabacum, thrives in warm and dry climates where it is cultivated. Its leaves undergo a meticulous process of curing and maturation in storage for two to three years before being utilized in various tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, and snuff. Beyond its economic significance, this image also sheds light on the harmful properties associated with tobacco consumption. Notably, nicotine—the potent alkaloid found within these leaves—is one of the most powerful poisons known to humans. Its addictive nature has made it an enduring challenge for those seeking to quit smoking or using other forms of tobacco. With magnification levels reaching up to 740 times at an 8x6-inch size print, this photograph offers viewers an extraordinary glimpse into the microscopic world that lies hidden within plants like tobacco. It serves as a reminder not only of their botanical beauty but also their complex biochemistry and potential impact on human health.
