Lemon shark with a remora on its head. Lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) can reach a length of over 3 metres and inhabit coral keys, docks, bays and river mouths in coastal regions. They are usually marine, but will occasionally enter freshwater areas, only entering the open sea in order to mate. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic presence of a Lemon shark, accompanied by an unusual companion - a remora perched on its head. The Lemon shark, scientifically known as Negaprion brevirostris, is an impressive creature that can grow over 3 meters in length. It predominantly inhabits coral keys, docks, bays, and river mouths in coastal regions. While primarily marine dwellers, these sharks occasionally venture into freshwater areas and only return to the open sea for mating purposes. The photograph was taken in the breathtaking surroundings of Little Bahama Bank on Grand Bahama Island. Lemon sharks are commonly found along the continental shelves of the Atlantic Ocean from the United States to Brazil and across the Pacific from Baja California in Mexico to Ecuador. Their striking blue hue beautifully contrasts with their formidable teeth as they gracefully navigate through their oceanic habitat. This image not only captures nature's raw beauty but also highlights various aspects of zoology and marine biology. As apex predators within tropical ecosystems, Lemon sharks play a crucial role in maintaining balance beneath the waves. Additionally, their unique relationship with remoras adds another layer of intrigue to this already fascinating species. Immerse yourself in this mesmerizing underwater scene where vibrant corals adorn the sea bed while this solitary lemon shark glides effortlessly through its domain – truly a testament to nature's wonders captured by Science Photo Library.
