Hannibal, Carthaginian general

Hannibal (247-182 BC), Carthaginian general, mounted on his horse, wielding a shield and sword. In the Second Punic War (between Carthage and Rome) he led an invading army that included war elephants, occupying much of Italy for the next 15 years. He was later defeated in North Africa by the Roman general Scipio Africanus. This woodcut portrait is from the 1575 Basle edition of Elogia virorum bellica virtute illustrium (Praise of Men Illustrious for Courage in War) by the Italian historian and biographer Paolo Giovio (1483-1552)
