Fossil invertebrate
Fossil invertebrate colony. Sectioned fossilized colony of bryozoans (Diplotrypa petropolitana). Bryozoans are aquatic animals that form colonies of interconnected, asexually-reproducing individuals (zooids). They may also reproduce sexually. The zooids are small (normally less than 1 millimetre across) but colonies can contain millions of them, reaching over a metre across. Bryozoans from the genus Diplotrypa date from the Ordovician period, about 505 to 438 million years ago. There are about 5000 bryozoan species alive today, mostly in marine habitats. They feed on microscopic plankton

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a sectioned fossilized colony of bryozoans, specifically the Diplotrypa petropolitana species. Bryozoans are fascinating aquatic animals that form interconnected colonies consisting of millions of small individuals called zooids. These colonies can stretch over a meter in diameter, despite each zooid being less than 1 millimeter across. Dating back to the Ordovician period around 505 to 438 million years ago, these ancient bryozoans offer us a glimpse into Earth's prehistoric past. Today, there are approximately 5,000 living species of bryozoans mostly found in marine habitats where they feed on microscopic plankton. The intricate details captured in this macro photograph highlight the delicate structures and complex organization within the fossilized colony. The light micrograph reveals the stunning beauty hidden within these tiny creatures from Russia's geological history. As we observe this mesmerizing image, we're reminded of the vast diversity and resilience present throughout our planet's long evolutionary journey. It serves as a testament to nature's ability to adapt and thrive through countless millennia. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into Earth science and paleontology with this remarkable depiction of a fossil invertebrate colony – an extraordinary piece that invites us to appreciate both our planet's ancient past and its vibrant present-day ecosystems.
