Coloured pictorial plaque on Pioneer 10 and 11

Pioneer plaque. Coloured version of a pictorial plaque attached to the exterior of the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecrafts, indicating their origin in case an intelligent alien species one day examines it. The " dumb-bell" symbol at top left represents a hydrogen atom, the most common element in the Universe. Below, 14 lines radiate from our Sun to the relative positions of 14 Pulsars - cosmic sources of radio energy. Human figures, the mans hand raised in goodwill, are set against the spacecraft to give scale. At bottom is a plan of the Solar System, showing the route of a Pioneer spacecraft from Earth. Pioneer 10 and 11 left Earth in 1972 and 1973 respectively. The frequency of each Pulsar at the time of launch is quoted in binary, relative to that of the Hydrogen atom with its " 1" unity symbol

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the coloured pictorial plaque that was attached to the exterior of the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecrafts, serving as a message to any intelligent alien species that may one day come across them. The plaque features a variety of symbolic elements aimed at conveying information about our origin and location in space. At the top left corner, we see a representation of a hydrogen atom, symbolizing the most abundant element in the Universe. Below it, 14 lines extend from our Sun towards the positions of 14 Pulsars - celestial objects emitting radio energy. These pulsars are depicted relative to their frequencies at the time of launch, expressed in binary code. To provide scale and emphasize goodwill, human figures are depicted with one hand raised in greeting against the backdrop of these remarkable spacecrafts. At the bottom lies a plan illustrating our Solar System's layout and showcasing Pioneer's journey from Earth. The Pioneer 10 and 11 missions commenced in 1972 and 1973 respectively, embarking on an extraordinary voyage into deep space. This thought-provoking image serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity for exploration beyond our own planet while leaving behind an enduring message for potential extraterrestrial encounters.
