This Victorian-era print, dating back to 1865, showcases three distinct species of lamprey: the Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), the Lampern or European River Lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis), and the Silver Lamprey (Ichthyomyzon unicuspis). The Sea Lamprey, with its green and yellow mottled body and long, thin shape, is a parasitic fish that inhabits the Atlantic Ocean and large freshwater systems. It is known for its distinctive circular, sucking mouth, which it uses to attach itself to the bodies of other fish to feed. The Lampern, or European River Lamprey, is depicted in the middle of the print, with a more slender, eel-like body and a yellowish color.
