EDITORS COMMENTS
This Victorian-era print, dating back to 1865, showcases three distinct species of lamprey: the Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), the Lampern or European River Lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis), and the Silver Lamprey (Ichthyomyzon unicuspis). The Sea Lamprey, with its green and yellow mottled body and long, thin shape, is a parasitic fish that inhabits the Atlantic Ocean and large freshwater systems. It is known for its distinctive circular, sucking mouth, which it uses to attach itself to the bodies of other fish to feed. The Lampern, or European River Lamprey, is depicted in the middle of the print, with a more slender, eel-like body and a yellowish color. This freshwater lamprey species is native to Europe and is anadromous, meaning it spends most of its life in freshwater but migrates to the sea to spawn. The Silver Lamprey, located on the right side of the print, is characterized by its silvery color and elongated, cylindrical body. This species, also known as the American Brook Lamprey, is native to North America and is less parasitic than its sea and European counterparts. Instead, it feeds primarily on organic matter in the bottom sediments of streams and rivers. This intriguing print offers a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating lamprey species, which have been important subjects of scientific study for over a century. With their unique features and historical significance, they continue to captivate the imagination of naturalists, biologists, and enthusiasts alike.
