EDITORS COMMENTS
Mandrake, Mandragora officinaris, also known as the European mandrake or common mandrake, is a fascinating and historically significant plant depicted in this exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving by Jean Victor Dupin junior from Pierre Joseph Buchoz's Herbier Artificial, published in Paris in 1783. The mandrake root, famously shaped like a human figure with elongated roots resembling arms, has been the subject of folklore and myth for centuries. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region and is now cultivated in Europe and North America. The mandrake is a monocotyledonous plant, belonging to the Solanaceae family. It grows as a vine, with simple, ovate leaves and bell-shaped, white or purple flowers. The root, which is the part of the plant most often used in traditional medicine and magic, is believed to have hallucinogenic properties and has been used for pain relief, as an aphrodisiac, and in various rituals. The mandrake root is shown in this engraving surrounded by other plants, including garlic (Allium sativum), a vine with yellow flowers (possibly Bignonia aequinoctialis), and a vine with red flowers (possibly Cayenne pepper, Capsicum annuum). The scientific names of the plants are also labeled in Latin, reflecting the importance of botanical knowledge during this period. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the art and science of botanical illustration during the late 18th century. It provides a glimpse into the natural world and the fascination with the exotic and the unknown that drove botanical exploration and discovery during this time.
